To get an idea of the importance of this blessed month, it is enough to see that these three Qur'anic verses announcing the obligation to observe the fast of the month of Ramadan are followed by one of the most touching verses describing the proximity That the sincere believer can get close to God whenever He invokes Him:

It is not insignificant that this closeness, even intimacy with God, is linked to the highly spiritual context of this blessed month that the companions were waiting impatiently for, so that they implored God, six months before his coming, He prolongs their life until this blessed month, and makes it easier for them to perform the fast of his days and the vivification of his nights by prayers.

Many hadiths of the Prophet (prayer and peace be upon him) announce in turn the special place this month holds in relation to the rest of the year. "When Ramadan arrives,  the gates of Heaven are wide open, the gates of hell are doubly closed, and the demons are chained. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) also said: "If only my community knew what Ramadan is, she would have liked to have Ramadan all year long. "

The fasting of this blessed month is the fourth pillar of Islam, and it is an opportunity to be closer to God and to renew his trust in Him, while hoping to obtain an absolution from his sins as well A reward that only God knows. In a hadith qudsi, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) tells us that God says: "Every work of the son of Adam belongs to him, except fasting, it belongs to Me, and it alone rewards him just value. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) also says: "Whoever fastes Ramadan as an act of faith for which he counts reward only with God, will see his previous sins expiated. He (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) also said: "Whoever watches over the nights of Ramadan by praying, by an act of faith for which he counts no reward except with God, will see his previous sins expiated. ".

These last two Hadiths thus show us the two most praiseworthy and most meritorious works of this month: fasting the days, and vivifying the nights by praying.

If God has ordered us to deprive ourselves of certain pleasant and agreeable things to our soul during the days of Ramadan, it is to lighten the part of the desires and passions of the soul, and to lower the deafening din caused by the needs Of the body which veils, or parasitic, the barely perceptible sound of the needs of our mind (ar-Rouh) which is an emanation of the divine breath.

It is only by diminishing the volume of the noise coming from the needs of the body and the passions of the soul that one can in fact be listening to one's mind and heart, and this primordial nature buried In each of us, which reminds us of our status as a servant of God, a creature whom God preferred to the angels making them prosper for our father Adam after having breathed him into His Spirit. When one lifts oneself from the physical weight of food that feeds our earthly nature, one rises spiritually if one fuels our celestial nature. But what is the spiritual nourishment we need? We shall return to this after a few technical definitions.
