6 tips for buying a second-hand mobile home

Even if it is necessary to check certain basic elements (engine, tires, mileage, maintenance book ...) as on a car, it is important to ask yourself certain other questions before buying a used motorhome. . This will allow you to define your needs and make the right choice.

1. Determine the type of motorhome you need

There are different types of motorhomes with varying budgets:

The campervan with a roof that can sometimes be raised: compact and easy to handle, perfect for a couple but less so for a long stay.
The overcab with bed located above the cabin: ideal for families of 4 to 7 people.
The profile without a bed above the cabin: it consumes less and is suitable for a couple with a maximum of 2 children.
The integral with integrated cabin in the cockpit and separate bedroom in the rear: the most luxurious and the most spacious.
2. Check the maximums allowed

The gray card indicates the maximum number of occupants not to be exceeded. Also check how many berths the vehicle has. Another element to take into consideration: the maximum authorized mass once the motorhome has been loaded and everyone on board.

3. Check that the vehicle is waterproof

Humidity is the enemy of the mobile home. Carefully inspect the bodywork for any traces of moisture which may have attacked the wooden structure. Also check that there is no suspicious smell inside.

4. Choose a suitable layout

You will spend your days and nights in a rather cramped space. Make sure the layout meets your needs and is comfortable. Don't hesitate to open the closets, lie down on the beds and settle into the armchairs. Also check whether the storage spaces and bunkers are large enough, and whether the bed arrangement is suitable for you.

5. Check all equipment

In the cabin, operate the power windows and try out the air conditioning. In the passenger compartment, open the taps, turn on all the lights, check that the fridge, water heater, etc. are working properly. Do not leave anything to chance.

6. Prefer a professional seller if possible

A used motorhome dealer usually offers you a warranty on the vehicle they sell to you. You are in principle guaranteed to acquire a mobile home in good condition, because the merchant has agreed to take it back and has normally serviced it before reselling it. Little tip: the low season (November to March) is a good time to buy a motorhome.
