Spring garden guide

Sunny weather is officially here, which means summer is upon us! Now is the time to prepare your garden for the hot sunny days to come. What better way to breathe some fresh air and soak up the sun than by spending some quality time tending to your flowers, herbs and vegetables!
Our guide to spring gardens has information on the flowers, vegetables, trees and shrubs that should be planted in the spring.
Flowers
It is recommended to plant pansies, primroses, daffodils, crocuses and perennials, such as hyacinths in March or April.
Lily and hosta should be planted after March 1.
Trees and shrubs can be planted later in the month.
When you are done planting, feed your seeds with slow-release flower fertilizer. You can do this by pouring a small tablespoonful into each hole. Then mix the fertilizer into the soil with your fingers to help the seeds grow faster.
Vegetables
Vegetables that tolerate cool weather like arugula, corn, salad, kale, peas, radishes, lettuce and spinach should be planted now.
Continue to take care of the vegetables that were planted in the fall.
Add manure or compost to any vegetable beds in your garden.
If you bought seeds from a garden center, follow the package directions.
Trees and shrubs
Early spring is a good time to plant deciduous trees, shrubs, hedges, and vines.
When planted in the spring, poplars, willows, ash and birch trees tend to grow best.
Evergreen trees can be planted about four weeks after the deciduous trees are planted.
Flowering shrubs, such as lilacs, magnolias, and hydrangeas, need to be pruned now.
Spring landscaping
In addition to the plantings, you can add new elements for the arrangement of your outdoor garden. Here are some popular spring garden trends that might inspire you:
Zen gardens
A Zen garden will bring peace and relaxation. Place a few comfortable chairs near the garden and enjoy the beautiful view and soothing sounds.
Fireplaces
You don't have to go camping to build a campfire. Garden fireplaces provide additional heat and produce light. Before building a campfire in your backyard, check to see if outdoor fires are allowed in your neighborhood. If garden fireplaces are allowed, follow fire safety protocols and dispose of the ashes when you are done.
Rain cisterns
Help conserve water by installing a rain cistern in your garden. Rustic or artisanal cisterns can collect rainwater, which can be reused for your garden. They are really easy to install and maintain and can really spruce up your garden!
Happy gardening!
