Periodic medical examination, a good investment
Many will agree, health is our most precious resource. Unfortunately, about a third of Canadians will go through at least one disability period of 90 days or more before the age of 65 [Note 1]. Thanks to prevention, you can target the risks related to your health and act accordingly.
Canadian physicians recommend that you undergo a periodic medical examination (PER). This comprehensive and expanded checkup allows you to discuss your mental and physical health as well as your general well-being. EMP also helps you understand risk factors for possible disability in addition to educating you about health issues you may face.
The EMP is a great time to ask questions about your test results and next steps. Be proactive: make an appointment for the next exam before you leave the clinic.
What is a disability?
It is a time, always unexpected, when a person is no longer fit to lead their professional life or to earn an income. Disability can occur suddenly, after an accident or a heart attack for example, but can also be due to common problems such as stress, fatigue or back pain. It can also be caused by a chronic or degenerative disease (cancer, depression, multiple sclerosis, etc.). During a period of disability, not only do you no longer receive income, but monthly expenses are maintained and can add up to new bills (health care, equipment, adaptation of a home, etc. ).
Analyze your real needs
By yourself or in the company of your life insurance and health insurance representative, it is important to analyze your current coverage. Gather all the relevant information to get an accurate picture of your coverage in the event of disability or health problem and the associated payments. The goal is to have the right protection at the right time.
Going through a period of disability can be financially difficult. However, prevention and planning will help you cope with the consequences of such a situation.
