Claim: the first steps to take with the insurance

To be compensated after a disaster (water damage, fire, etc.), take the time to consult your home insurance contract as well as the declaration process it imposes on you. Then, remember to notify your insurer by phone, email, mail, from your customer area (on the mobile application or the insurer's website) or directly at the branch: your insurer's contact details are indicated on your receipts or in your contract. The claim must also be confirmed by registered mail with acknowledgment of receipt, specifying your contact details and the references of your contract. In your letter, it is also necessary to indicate the description of the incident (nature, date, place, circumstances, etc.), the estimate of the damage, any damage caused to other people, as well as the contact details of these people and of their insurance. In the event of water damage, you can complete an amicable report and send it to your insurer.
How long do you have to report your claim?

Declaring a claim assumes that you meet the deadlines set out in your insurance contract. If these deadlines are not respected, you risk a forfeiture of guarantee if this clause is indicated in your contract and the late declaration is prejudicial to your insurer. In this case, the latter may refuse to compensate you. The deadlines for declaring your claim depend on its nature. The declaration must be made within 2 working days for a theft and 10 days if the loss is the consequence of a natural disaster. The latter will be the subject of a decree published in the Official Journal. It is from this publication that you can enter your insurance. If your claim is neither theft nor the consequence of a natural disaster, you have 5 days to report it. This period does not run from the occurrence of your loss, but from the moment you discover it. Note that some insurers may offer contracts with longer reporting deadlines.

If your claim concerns a theft or burglary, you must file a complaint with the police or the gendarmerie and send a copy of the theft declaration to your insurer.
Late declaration: forfeiture of warranty

If you have not declared your claim on time, your insurer may object to forfeiture of warranty and refuse you compensation if this is mentioned in the contract and the delay in reporting has been detrimental to it.
How is the amount of damage suffered?

To report your claim to your insurer, you must assess the amount of damage suffered. It is therefore essential to keep all damaged items until they have been included in the assessment of the amount of damage, and to bring together the various elements proving the existence and value of these items (invoices, warranty cards, photos of objects, testimonials from third parties, etc.) or stolen goods. These supporting documents are important in order to benefit from appropriate support following the processing of your file. The insurer can also appoint an expert to accurately assess the damage to your home and the property it contains. For damaged real estate, a repair estimate is necessary. Your insurer will be able to offer you solutions in particular if it has a network of partner companies.

You are strongly advised to make electronic copies of certain supporting documents (invoices, warranty certificate, etc.) in order to be able to provide them to your insurer if the originals are destroyed during the accident.
