Appearance

Gyutaro is tall, grayish and pale complexioned, mottled with black, whose anatomy was somewhat odd in that his upper torso, arms and legs were all extremely muscular while his waist was incredibly lean. , its pelvis protruding at an unnatural angle. He had thin, green and red eyes with bright orange scleras that slanted steeply downward at the sides, with the kanji for "First Quarter Moon" ( じょう げん, Jogen ) and "Six" ( ろく, Roku ) engraved on it. He had unkempt black hair that abruptly turned a brighter green around the crown of his head, worn in a messy fashion with uneven bangs and several ahoges. Gyutaro has been repeatedly noted as looking very ugly. [2]

Gyutaro is shirtless, wearing only baggy blue pants, along with seven patterned red pieces of cloth to decorate his body, one large around his neck and three smaller ones around each arm.

Personality

Due to the difficult life he has led in near-constant poverty and the tragedies he has experienced as a human, Gyutaro has portrayed himself as cruel, mean-spirited, and envious of all those fortunate enough to to have a better life than his, which led him to develop a habit of sarcastically complimenting a person's best traits, only to then try to kill them out of revenge, as he attempted to do with Tengen Uzui . One habit he seems to have is the penchant for inflicting injury on himself when angry, frustrated, or jealous, as seen when he scratched himself deeply when jealous of Tengen.

Having lived over a hundred years and fought many Demon Slayers and Pillars , Gyutaro became somewhat arrogant and prideful in battle, developing a habit of underestimating his opponents and viewing them as inferior to him, as he did with the demon slayer team sent to kill him by having his sister fight them and deal with them for her.

Despite his negative traits, Gyutaro has a sincere and strong love for his younger sister, Daki. Having raised her himself due to his mother's mental instability, this family love was so strong that, although he had become a demon and had almost forgotten his human life, he retained a considerable affection for her. Because of this, he developed a tendency to occasionally spoil her and allow her to do as she pleases, even if her actions go against her best interests. However, his love for her doesn't stop him from screaming and insulting her out of frustration.

After his death and his final thoughts, Gyutaro doesn't regret the choices he's made throughout his life—especially the choice to voluntarily become a demon and kill and eat hundreds of people over hundreds of years— which shows how misanthropic and embittered he became because of the terrible and difficult circumstances he had experienced as a human. However, he later states that the only real regret he has in his life is his sister, Ume, showing that deep down Gyutaro regrets that the negative influence of how he raised her is at the origin of his transformation into a selfish person. During her final moments, Gyutaro wonders if she could have had a happier life if he hadn't been a part of her life. He sincerely wishes for her to be reborn and raised by someone other than him, taking complete responsibility for all her deplorable actions and showing how much he loves her.

Later, even in death, Gyutaro sincerely wants a happy life for Daki telling him to take another path than his own, showing that he wanted his sister to have a fresh start in a new life without him having a bad influence on her.

Story

human life

Gyutaro was born into poverty, in the lowest class of the pleasure district. His mother often beat him and tried to kill him before he was even born, due to an alleged miscarriage attempt, as she could not afford to feed him, but her efforts were in vain when she died of syphilis.

Throughout his childhood, he was taunted by other neighborhood residents for his appearance, voice, and lack of hygiene. When his sister, Ume, was born, he gained a sense of pride and acted as a "Collector" in the neighborhood.

When his sister was 13 and officially started working in a brothel, he returned home to find her tied up, burned and left for dead in a ditch because she had gouged out her eye. a samurai with a hairpin. He jumps into the ditch and begins to panic, tearfully begging for his sister to return to normal while cradling her body. As he embraces his dying sister, the same samurai sneaks up behind Gyutaro and slashes his back in an attempt to kill him. He then hears the samurai talking to the manager of the brothel, who turns out to be the one who demanded that Gyutaro be killed. However, before the samurai can finish him off, he manages to jump out of the ditch and kill the manager as well as the samurai with his sickle.

Although injured, Gyutaro carried his sister Ume's dying body all over the Hanamachi district in search of help, but was denied help wherever he went. He eventually succumbs to exhaustion, with both he and Ume on the verge of death. Before the end, they were found by Doma , then of Top Rank number 6, who was scouring the pleasure quarters to devour the young women in the area. He then offers them out of charity to "help" them by transforming them into demons and gives them a few drops of his blood to initiate their transformation. He then happily challenged them to become powerful enough to be chosen by "  that man  " and join the Twelve Demon Moons .

demonic life

As a demon, he and his sister, now known as "Daki", continued to reside in the Pleasure Quarter and continued to terrorize and feast on its inhabitants, brother and sister seeming to have taken a liking to not eating than the most beautiful geisha and oiran in the neighborhood. After an unknown number of years, they were finally noticed and recognized by "this man" and were given the title Higher Rank number 6 of the Twelve Demon Moons which they then shared among themselves.

During his long life as a demon, Gyutaro managed to kill and eat at least thirteen Pillars of the Demon Slayer Army , while his sister killed and ate seven.

Synopsis

Pleasure District Arc

After Daki calls out to him, Gyutaro emerges from his body, quickly taking him to another part of the room. He has reattached her severed head and comforts her meanwhile. Tengen attacks the duo, but Gyutaro quickly counters, injuring the Pillar. He then compliments the Demon Slayer for stopping his attack. [3]

The mysterious demon then compliments Tengen's face, skin, flesh, and height, as well as his alleged popularity with women. Feeling envy for the Pillar, Gyutaro threatens it with a painful death. Hearing Daki's complaints about Nezuko Kamado 's involvement , he promises her revenge on everyone who has hurt her. Throwing his sickle-shaped weapons with great force, which returned to him soon after, Gyutaro failed to harm Tengen or the bystanders he was protecting. He reaffirms his envy of the Pillars, which only increases when the Demon Slayer reveals to him that he has three wives. The mysterious demon unleashes his Blood Power  : Flying Blood Sickles, a barrage of blood blades. His attack is futile, as Tengen escapes through a hole he made in the ground, which surprises the demon. Gyutaro orders his attack to spin. Tengen deflects the attack once again, throwing and detonating several small bombs in Gyutaro's vicinity. Wrapped in his sister's belt, Gyutaro resists the blast, proudly declaring that they are one. [4]

The emaciated demon informs his opponent that he is different from previous Pillars he had fought, once again expressing his envy at Tengen's talents. He remains silent as the Pillar of Sound dismisses his claims, which cites Gyomei Himejima and Muichiro Tokito as examples of amazing talents, but retaliates by asking how the poison from his technique hasn't killed the Demon Slayer yet. Moments later, Gyutaro grimaces, declaring Tengen's statement about his resistance to the poison to be a bluff, and blocks the Pillar's twin blades with his two sickles. Briefly clashing with his opponent, Gyutaro is enraged that Tengen hit his sister. He is then surprised when Tengen drops more bombs on him and his sister, from which he manages to escape unscathed. He quickly deduces the true nature of the bombs, a special powder capable of injuring demons, leaving him confident of their eventual victory, but he is surprised by Tengen's sword strike. Amazed by the Pillar's gripping strength, Gyutaro deflects the attack, but is left with a slight neck injury. He warns Tengen of his impending death, but he is surprised by the arrival of Inosuke Hashibira and Zenitsu Agatsuma. [5] [6]

The mysterious demon reiterates his death threat, believing that the arrival of the Pillar's subordinates is insufficient. Tengen remains confident of their victory, having deduced that cutting off both siblings' heads at the same time is the key to success, but Gyutaro assures him that it wouldn't be easy to accomplish. He also mentions that he and his sister had eaten many Pillars, fifteen and seven, respectively. He then silently watches Daki being taken to the roof by Zenitsu , with Inosuke going to help the wooden-headed young man in his fight, but remains confident that she would prevail. Using his connection with his brother, Gyutaro closes one of his eyes and quickly attacks Tanjiro Kamado. He nearly lands a blow on the young man's neck, but Tengen stops him at the last second, stabbing him in the chin inches away from the killing blow. In the midst of this clash, his sister's fight scarves above them came down, prompting Gyutaro to dismiss Tengen's claim of success as a lie, as well as calling his opponents incompetent for lack of movement control. [7]

Anecdotes

Muzan Kibutsuji stated in Chapter 98 that he was the true holder of the Upper Sixth Rank and not his sister.

Gyutaro was one of Muzan's favorite Higher Ranks, as he highly valued his circumstance and greedy personality. [8]

The word "Gyu" refers to the barkers who entice customers to enter the pleasure district. After working as a Gyu, he appropriated the word and used it to name himself Gyutaro. [9]
