For several years now, many articles have been written about the labor shortage in the automotive industry sectors. By the early 2000s, the labor shortage was on everyone's lips. Twenty years later, it still strikes very hard.

HOW CAN OUR INDUSTRY ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM?
We have to face it and ask ourselves what caused this shortage. The auto industry has not adapted to competition. In other words, other industries such as construction, IT, aeronautics have not hesitated to come and seek labor from our industry.

How? Certainly not by promising to pay 50% for the safety boots after 3 months of employment. Ask workers why they left the auto industry: The salary!

THE SOLUTION NOBODY WANTS TO HEAR
Salaries offered in other sectors are significantly higher. The first criterion that young people look at before embarking on training: How much does it pay? Result: Our training centers are almost empty.

Look at what the government is doing now to attract young people to education and the health care system: it is increasing entry wages into these professions. For several years, for fear of losing mandates, recruiters have tried to make employers and workers believe that salary was not the priority, that they should instead focus on other social benefits such as the gym, the summer schedule, team building, family atmosphere, etc.

Obviously, the package is important, but the primary incentive remains the salary. When a person earns $ 80,000 / year, having access to a gym is a nice bonus! However, at $ 17 an hour, she doesn't have time to hit the gym. She must have a job to pay her rent.

International recruitment

Another miracle solution proposed: International recruitment. It is an illusion to think that workers from overseas will stay in our industry for a long time. As soon as they understand that it is possible to earn more in another sector, they will quit.

The fall was long. It will have lasted more than 20 years. The ascent will be too. Arm yourself with patience! Before losing the few resources still available, it is necessary, as soon as possible, to correct the salaries offered. Some employers have understood this and are offering good wages, but the damage is done. The available labor pool is very low. So it is high time to open our eyes: the whole industry must react and quickly.
