Motor insurance contracts in England

There are three types of car insurance available in England:

    Third Party: The legal minimum required. Covers claims for damage caused by your vehicle to other people or vehicles;
    Third Party, Fire & Theft (TPF & T): This is an extension of Third Party Insurance, which additionally covers damage and loss caused by fire and theft;
    Comprehensive: Covers everything from damage to your own vehicle, accidents to medical costs resulting from a collision.

Most insurances let you choose the different levels of excess in addition to the type of insurance. This is the amount you pay out of pocket before insurance kicks in. Excess is the equivalent of franchising.

For example, if you take an excess of £ 100 and have to change your windshield, at a cost of £ 150 you will pay £ 100 and your insurer will cover the remainder or £ 50. The greater your excess, the less expensive your insurance will be. Be careful, however, because if you set a excessively high deductible, you will not be covered for minor accidents.
