Auto insurance: what is it?

Auto insurance is a guarantee intended to cover the civil liability of vehicle owners. Concretely, it covers bodily injury, but also material damage caused to third parties by a land motor vehicle. It is compulsory as soon as cars are put into circulation on public roads.

The basic formula of this insurance does not cover personal damage or damage to your vehicle in an accident. To benefit from these protections, the insured must subscribe to additional guarantees. This subscription can be made with Direct Assurance.

Auto insurance: a mandatory process

Auto insurance is compulsory for all vehicle owners. It has been compulsory since the entry into force of the law of February 27, 1958. The Highway Code and the Insurance Code also mention it.

Failure to comply with this rule exposes the offender to multiple penalties: license suspension, vehicle confiscation, etc. A financial penalty may also be imposed, which can reach the sum of 3,750 euros.

For a first offense, the offender is ordered to pay a fine of 500 euros. It is reduced to 400 euros in the event of payment within a fortnight. This fine is however increased to 1,000 euros in the event of non-payment within 45 days. In the event of a repeat offense, a criminal court may force the defendant to follow awareness training courses.

In addition, uninsured drivers face heavy financial penalties in the event of an accident that is their fault. They can also be sued by the FGAO (compulsory insurance guarantee fund) for the reimbursement of the sums paid by this fund to the victims.

The different guarantees of automobile insurance

Auto insurance guarantees are legion. They aim to provide the best possible protection for policyholders. They are classified into three different categories: liability insurance, property and casualty insurance and optional coverage.
Liability insurance

It covers material damage and bodily injury caused to other drivers, pedestrians or passengers in a vehicle. It only covers damage caused to third parties. It therefore does not take into account the damage suffered by the insured and his vehicle.

Liability insurance is also the cheapest insurance option. It is the minimum guarantee that every vehicle owner must have.
Multi-risk insurance

Multi-risk insurance offers extended guarantees to policyholders. It not only protects third parties, but also the drivers responsible for an accident. It covers both material, immaterial and bodily damage. Thanks to this insurance formula, you can benefit from full coverage, regardless of the degree of your liability.

The guarantees offered by this insurance are therefore legion. In particular, it offers protection against fires, acts of terrorism, theft, or even damage caused by storms and natural disasters. It can also protect you against glass breakage, technological disasters and acts of vandalism.

However, property and casualty insurance does not have an unlimited scope of protection. Policyholders are therefore invited to check the deductibles, guarantees and exclusion clauses of their contracts before signing them.
Optional guarantees

Optional guarantees protect policyholders against many risks. They adapt to their specific situations and meet all their needs. In addition to property damage, optional warranties also protect against explosions, theft and personal injury.

It also supports the insured in his legal proceedings. It thus allows the latter to carry out certain legal procedures. The terms of this legal protection vary from one insurance company to another, but also from one contract to another.

In addition, optional guarantees revalue auto insurance premiums upwards
