Manage the crisis

Ask the student if he has asthma

Let him take the position that suits him best

Reassure him and breathe slowly with him

Help him take his medicine

An asthma attack usually resolves within 10 minutes.

From the first signs (shortness of breath, wheezing, chest tightness…) take the treatment : usually 2 puffs (aerosol) or 1 inhalation (powder inhaler.

After 10 - 15 minutes start again if the discomfort persists

Wait 10 minutes, start again if the symptoms have not disappeared. An attack should stop after taking 6 to 8 puffs ( 3 to 4 inhalations).

Think about looking for and eliminating the triggering factors : cold, dust, chlorine… If the crisis persists : call for help !

Of course, severe seizures are rare during PE. It is recommended that you get to know the students at risk at the start of the year ( have one form per student filled out or ask the nurse) in order to prevent attacks in children with asthma. Encourage them to you prevent lor s a crisis occurred the night before. The fatigue caused makes the student easily vulnerable to the appearance of another crisis. Thanks to simple rules and sometimes taking certain medications before exercise, the asthmatic student can practice all the activities offered to him.

Protocols can be put in place in some schools with students with asthma. An individualized reception plan (PAI) which brings together parents, attending physician, head of establishment, teacher and school doctor, specifies in writing the usual treatment in the event of a crisis (taking an inhaler, people to be notified) as well as the arrangements s specific requirements regarding physical activities.

              * Warning : taking medication (beta mimetic : ex ventoline ) is mentioned at the beginning (see in progress) of the EPS lesson . However, everything must be done to facilitate the treatment of the crisis without delay. The ministerial circular of 10/11/99 on the PAI allows treatment to be taken in special cases . Beware of students who systematically take a drug when there is only normal hyperventilation due to exertion. There is no risk of addiction , but an imbalance can develop in the event of abuse and interfere with the positive action of the drug. Asthma was destabilized, so the doctor had to readjust the treatment. A consultation with the school doctor and authorization (especially medical certificate by example) can solve these problems s .

Students can also be encouraged to join " asthma schools " which are establishments with designed educational programs designed to help the student with asthma acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to manage effectively. his illness on a daily basis.
