A minority or subordinate group is a sociological group that does not constitute a politically dominant plurality of the total population of a given society. A sociological minority is not necessarily a digital minority - it can include any disadvantaged group in relation to a dominant group in terms of social status, education, employment, wealth and political power. To avoid confusion, some authors prefer the terms "subordinate group" and "dominant group" to "minority" and "majority".
In socio-economics, the term "minority" generally refers to a socially subordinate ethnic group (understood in terms of language, nationality, religion and / or culture). Other minority groups include persons with disabilities, "economic minorities" (low-income and unemployed workers), "age minorities" (younger or older than normal age) and sexual minorities (whose sexual orientation or gender identity differs from the sociological norm). ).
The term "minority group" often appears alongside a discourse on civil rights and collective rights that has gained prominence in the twentieth century. Members of minority groups are subject to differential treatment in the society in which they live. This discrimination can be directly based on the perceived belonging of an individual to a minority group, regardless of personal achievements. It can also happen indirectly, because of social structures that are not equally accessible to all. Activists campaigning on various issues can use the language of minority rights, including student rights, consumer rights and animal rights. In recent years, some members of traditionally perceived mainstream groups have attempted to portray themselves as an oppressed minority, such as white, heterosexual men of the middle class.
Studies have consistently shown a correlation between negative attitudes or prejudices towards minorities and social conservatism (as well as the opposite, positive attitudes and social progressivism) [2]. Minority groups in history include Jews from Nazi Germany and African Americans from the Jim Crow period
