A drought

A drought is a prolonged and abnormally dry period during which there is not enough water to meet the normal needs of the users. Drought is not just low rainfall; if it were, a large part of inland Australia would be in the grip of an almost perpetual drought. Because people use water in so many different ways, there is no universal definition of drought.

Meteorologists monitor the extent and severity of drought in terms of rainfall deficits. Agronomists assess impact on primary industries, hydrologists compare groundwater levels and sociologists define it according to social expectations and perceptions
