Seller
sales employee, self-service employee, customer advisor, sales advisor, sales advisor
Always ready to help, salespeople welcome and guide customers in small businesses and hypermarkets. Young people have easy access to this profession, but are often offered part-time work or fixed-term contracts (CDD). A salesperson who has proven himself, on the other hand, can expect relatively rapid career development. A piece of advice: enter the job market with a professional baccalaureate, or even a BTS.
Professional life
Important needs
There are more than a million sellers in France, all sectors combined: food products, textiles, cultural products (books, DVDs, etc.). Nearly 25,000 places are offered each year in boutiques, stores and supermarkets. Recruitments which, a priori, have no reason to dry up in the coming years.
Job...but precarious
The sales profession is open to young people who can access it without prior experience. Result: 60% of professionals currently in activity are under 35 years old. The other side of the coin: we are often hired part-time or for a specific period of time.
Fast promotions
Successful experience in sales allows you to fairly quickly access a job as team leader and then, possibly, store manager. In mass distribution, changes concern the positions of department head, department head, and even manager.
Beginner's salary
1260 euros gross per month + bonuses.
Working conditions
Varied exercise locations
The salesperson occupies a position that is certainly sedentary, but in all types of commerce. It can be found both in small neighborhood shops and in hypermarkets. Depending on the size of the company, working conditions are not necessarily the same.
Extendable hours
The salesperson works on Saturdays and works many overtime hours, especially during sales or end-of-year holidays. These busy periods require great physical fitness and a “zen” spirit.
Difficult conditions
Most often standing, the seller can work in a sometimes difficult sound and light environment. In small businesses, he has little autonomy and works almost constantly with his boss.
SKILLS
Smile and neat outfit
With a smile on his face, the seller wears an impeccable outfit and knows how to keep his cool in all circumstances. He has a trained eye to spot what is wrong: moved item, opened packaging, stained clothing... and which is likely to hinder the movement of customers in the store... or not to encourage them to buy.
The sense of service
Listening, availability, friendliness: human qualities are as valuable as diplomas or technical knowledge in this profession where relationships play a capital role. To make a successful sale, you must first inspire confidence in the customer. Good oral expression is a significant asset.
Product knowledge
Specializing in a department or sector (food, household appliances, cosmetics, etc.), the seller knows all the characteristics of the products he sells. He constantly stays informed about technological developments or changes in fashion.
Nature of the work
Prepare the sales area
The seller carefully arranges the products on the shelves or in the window. He pays particular attention to labeling so that all prices are clearly displayed. Items moved by customers? Its role is also to put them in their place. He also sometimes offers activities around a theme.
Advise the client
A customer undecided about the choice of clothing, a question related to the maintenance of a fabric... the salesperson is there to provide practical information. For high-tech equipment (computers, DVD players, digital cameras, etc.), he does not hesitate to demonstrate the product for the customer.
Versatile if needed
In small structures, the salesperson can fulfill several functions. Carry out stock inventory, place orders (quantities, deadlines, cost, etc.). He can still collect payments and record the revenue at the end of the day.
Training to enter the profession
The CAP offers immediate opportunities. To find stable employment, it is recommended to continue at least until the professional baccalaureate. As for the BTS, it allows you to progress more quickly towards management positions.
