What is the best bicycle insurance?
The practice of the bicycle or electric bicycle exposes to 3 types of claims: damage to others, damage to the cyclist and damage to the bicycle (theft, breakage etc.). When you know that more than 400,000 bikes are stolen each year, finding out about the insurance conditions is essential! However, who compensates you in the event of damage to / with your bicycle? What is the price of such a blanket? Do certain cycling practices require you to take out insurance? Answers!
What insurance to ride an electric bike?
Is it compulsory to insure your electric bike? No, unless its speed exceeds 25km / h! Indeed, Directive 2002/24 / EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of March 18, 2008 classifies electric bikes reaching 45km / h as fast electric assist bikes or also called speed bikes (namely a speed ranging from 25km / h at 45 km / h), in the category of mopeds.
This classification of the 45 km / h electric bicycle implies the compulsory subscription of third-party insurance for civil liability (such as two-wheeler insurance) as well as the registration of the fast electric bicycle (+ 25 km / h), a gray card, the wearing of a helmet and the ban on riding on cycle paths. Failure to register could result in a fine of € 750, and not having insurance for your fast electric bike could result in a fine of € 3,750.
The other electrically assisted bicycles below the 25 km / h threshold are, on the other hand, considered “classic” bicycles and are therefore authorized to ride on cycle paths. While taking out insurance for electric bikes is not compulsory, the purchase price of an electric bike can in itself justify taking out insurance against theft and against accidents (civil liability).
Our advice: make sure that your VAE is approved before taking out your electric bike insurance.
Bike theft, how can I claim my insurance?
Today in France, more than 1,000 bikes are stolen every day. Unfortunately, if you use your bike every day, there is a likelihood that you will be the victim of theft. When the situation arises, it is reassuring to know what to do next. Here is our advice and the steps to take with your insurance in the event of bike theft:
Step 1: go and file a complaint to report the theft of your bike. It's the first thing to do. A report (PV) will be given to you by the police station or the gendarmerie and will be requested by the insurance when reporting the theft of your bike. Plus, it's the only way you'll ever have a chance to find your bike again. To save time, you can complete the pre-complaint form directly online.
Step 2: turn to your insurer. In some cases, your home insurance may compensate you in the event of theft. Otherwise, bike insurance is a little luxury to look forward to. For a few tens of euros per year, you are covered for all claims related to your bicycle. Unfortunately, without one of these two covers, you will not be able to be compensated and will just have to hope that the police find your stolen bike as soon as possible.
Step 3: following your insurance claim and sending the necessary parts (theft report, bike invoice, bike brand and model), you will receive compensation according to the conditions of your contract. Generally, the reimbursement of your bike insurance will be a lump sum, depending on the original value of your bike.
In the event of a bike theft, be responsive. Most insurances require that the declaration of the loss be made in the days following the theft. It would be a shame to miss out on a pick-up because you've let time run out!
