The signature is essential, in particular to be legally identifiable, but also to express one's personality. The look of your signature gives clues to your general attitude, personality, and social position. Improve your signature to make it a valuable professional tool, and why not, an object of personal satisfaction. Study your current signature. Put your signature on a piece of paper and study it carefully. Would you like to sign differently? Identify areas that you could modify to improve your signature.

The legibility of your signature. Could someone who sees your signature easily decipher your last name or even the initials that compose it?

Regarding the letters, do you prefer cursives, block letters or a mixture of the two fonts?

Focus on certain letters, especially your initials. How do you find these? Do you like the way they look, or have you spotted a particular letter that doesn't seem to match the rest?

Do some research. Finding a particular form of signature may help you decide what changes to make to your own signature. To do this, start by researching the signatures of personalities you admire. You may as well take inspiration from the autograph of these people.

If you are an artist looking for a "professional" signature, take a look at the work of your counterparts. Also consider how you are going to go about signing. Note, however, that painting your signature is generally much less complicated than signing with a pen, taking care, however, to make your mark distinctive from that of others.

Historical signatures. In the past, calligraphy was a real skill. Take a leap in the past, around the 19th century, the beginning of the 20th century: you will find very beautiful signatures made in pen. The Internet contains many signatures of heads of state and great writers.

Find the font that suits you. If you particularly appreciate the shape of cursive letters, take inspiration from calligraphy manuals. Whether you want a signature with a more angular and slender appearance or a more sophisticated one, consult the font databases or calligraphy manuals to find the style that best represents you.

Once you've found a font that catches your eye, print it out or make a photocopy. It is also quite possible for you to be spoiled for choice, so do not hesitate to choose the letters that you like.

Write capital letters. Since initials are the most visible part of a signature, make sure to personalize them, but also make them as readable as possible. Otherwise, you can just sign with your initials  [1] .

Decorate your signature with curls, for example, to then appreciate the result.

Change the capitals that make up your first and last name until you're satisfied with the result.

Train as much as possible. To be able to reproduce your signature whenever necessary, it is essential to practice. The cadence as well as the shape of the letters that make up your signature will become automatic for your hand.

Sign your name again and again on a notepad. In class, in a meeting, instead of doodling or even in front of the television, practice!

Be consistent. Your signature identifies you. When you change your signature, remember to correct the one on the back of your bank cards. In the same spirit, put your new signature on all your documents and receipts. Anyone who reads and compares your signature should be able to easily recognize that it is you.

Determine the ideal size. The size of your signature is a good indicator of self-confidence. For example, a signature that exceeds the box intended to welcome it means that you have great confidence in yourself. Be careful, however, this can also indicate some form of insolence. On the contrary, a small signature can indicate motivation, but also a lack of self-confidence  [2] .

To overcome these inconveniences, opt for a medium-sized signature, indicative of a certain form of balance and modesty.

Judge the readability. If people who write illegibly attribute this to a lack of time, it should be said that it is neither long nor complicated to write your name in an understandable way.

A signature that is difficult to read or understand can make people believe that the person to whom it belongs is a sufficient person, whose identity should be known without having to ask!

Be careful not to come across as arrogant or inattentive  [3] .

Give due importance to your initials. Writing your initials instead of fully signing your first and last name can be formal. Be careful though, because some initials can form words you may not want to be associated with!

If your initials form an acronym or a word, avoid making it your signature.

If your goal is to create a relaxed professional atmosphere, make your first name clear in your signature.

If, on the contrary, you want to establish a hierarchical professional relationship, just write the first letter of your first name for a more formal signature.

Think about the name you want to use. The number of signatures you will need to make depends greatly on the circumstances. Also, very few people are known by a single name, like those celebrities who can just sign with their first name. When it comes to Mr. and Mrs. Everybody, this is not appropriate.

If you have a very common name and want to avoid any confusion, feel free to write your first and last name, and why not, add an initial between the two to make your signature stand out.

If you are close to the person you are signing for and want to emphasize this, sign with your first name. This is done in particular in any letter addressed to family members, for example.

When communicating formally with subordinates, add a title such as Professor or Doctor to your signature. This can restore professional propriety with a person who is too loose.

Use honorifics sparingly. You have worked hard to obtain this professional or academic qualification, so it is tempting to mention this in your signature. Be aware, however, that honorary titles are good to be mentioned only in the professional context  [4] .

Make sure to add your honorary title only when it is necessary, moreover, in a professional context. The mentions Dr or Pr for example refer to a professional qualification. Concerning associations and diplomas, if they should not be mentioned in the signature, they find a legitimate place on a CV.

The proprieties indicate that one does not associate the military distinction and the professional or honorary title. If you have both distinctions, prefer the military distinction. However, if the context requires that you indicate your professional qualification, do not add the professional distinction.

Consider the context. If you're a professor and you're surrounded by Doctors of Philosophy, underlining your title may come across as a sign of arrogance. In such a case, be formal with your subordinates and, on the contrary, less formal with your counterparts.
