What to do if your car is stolen?

It happens to everyone, whether for logistical purposes, to save time or simply out of laziness, to leave personal belongings in their car for the day or for the night. We imagine that since the car is parked near our home, our belongings are safe there. However, theft from inside cars is very common and you need to be careful about it.

Fortunately, your insurer can help you if you find yourself in this situation.

The first thing to do is give a statement to the police, since it is indeed a crime. Next, you need to determine which of your insurance policies, auto or home, will cover the theft. It might seem strange to believe that a home insurance policy covers car theft, but think again, it is indeed possible!

Indeed, if the stolen goods are not attached to the vehicle or are not used to operate it, it is with your home insurance that you must file a claim. For example, if you've left a camera, sports equipment or even a computer in the car, we're talking about unrelated property.

For goods that are permanently attached to the vehicle, that have been removed temporarily or that are used only seasonally as well as items that are used for the use of the vehicle, it is the auto insurance that will cover the flight. We are talking about accessories like an audio system or a bicycle rack. As for goods that do not belong to you, it is the insurance of their owner who will grant them the compensation. If a friend of yours left their bike in your car and it was stolen, for example, they'll have to file a claim.

This type of situation proves that it can be a good idea to take out home and auto insurance with the same company because the claims are easier to make. Also, you only pay one deductible (the highest), if applicable. The deductible is the part of the damage that is the responsibility of the insured and that you will therefore have to assume. For example, for damage or theft valued at $ 1,200 you may have to pay $ 250 deductible, depending on your policy. You can get your auto and home insurance quotes online in minutes!

In general, proof of purchase and invoices can make it easier to replace different goods. It is therefore recommended, for any purchase of value, to keep the said proofs. Also be aware that most complaints can be made over the phone.

The moral of the story: Avoid leaving valuables in your automobile, even if it is parked near your house, even if you live in a quiet neighborhood and even if you will leave it there for only a few minutes. Caution is advised and it is better to take a little more 5 minutes to get your equipment out than to come back to an empty car!
