Lend your car and insurance

In Quebec, you can lend your car, as long as the person has our permission and has a valid driver's license.

But if the person driving your car caused an accident, would you be compensated?

Compensated or not?

It all depends on the protections you have in your insurance contract and the driver's liability in the accident:

If the driver is not responsible for the accident, you will be reimbursed for the damage suffered, even if you only have liability protection.
If the driver is responsible for the accident, you will only be compensated if you have purchased insurance for damage to the insured vehicle
Rider 27: insurance for damage to the vehicle that does not belong to us

If the driver is responsible for the accident and has this rider in their auto insurance policy, they could ask their insurer to reimburse the damage to your vehicle.

If this is the case, you would have the choice to make the claim to your insurer or to ask the driver to make a claim to his insurer.

Whether your insurer or the driver's insurer pays for the damage, the accident will only be entered in the driver's driving record at the time of the accident.
