How to teach your daughter or son to drive?
Your child can take their theory test from the age of 17. If you wish, you can then teach him to drive. To make your life easier, we have summarized the 5 steps to follow for a driver's license.
1. Take the theory test
Some mutuals offer courses for In many secondary schools, final year students will again be able, from January 1, 2019, to prepare for the theoretical exam (B permit) at school. But vIs that not possible with you? Your child can then also study the theory himself or follow 12 hours of theoretical lessons via a driving school.
The theory test takes place at an examination center. The minimum age is 17 years old. If your child obtains at least 41/50, he will receive an application for a provisional driving license to present to the municipal administration to obtain a provisional driving license.
2. Learn to drive
Your child can learn to drive at an approved driving school, but this is not legally required. As a parent, you can teach them to drive via the “free route”.
As a "guide", you must have completed 3 hours of training with your child. This training is called a "pedagogical meeting". You must also have held a driving license B for at least 8 years, without withdrawing your license during the last 3 years. Also good to know:
You must affix a regulatory L on the rear of your car and install a second mirror inside the vehicle.
As a guide, you should always accompany your child on public roads.
You must complete a road book (educational tool for monitoring your learning to drive) and a logbook certifying that your child has covered the compulsory 1,500 km before the practical exam.
Your child cannot ride between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, the eve of legal holidays and public holidays.

3. Insurance supervision
In Belgium, motor vehicle liability insurance is legally compulsory if you drive on public roads. You are then protected as a driver if you cause an accident with bodily injury or material damage to third parties.
The good news is that if your child is driving your car, they are also covered by your car insurance. Even without you having to pay anything extra. To be in perfect order, however, you must inform your insurer that your son or daughter will be driving your car.
4. Take the risk perception test
Before taking the road test, your child is required to take an online risk perception test at an examination center. After passing this test, your daughter or son can either take their road test or take a technical driving skills test so they can drive on their own for 18 months before the road test.
5. Take the practical test
Is your child ready? He can then take his practical exam on the public highway in one of the examination centers, provided he meets the following criteria:
Your child must be at least 18 years old.
His provisional driving license is less than 3 years old.
He trained between 3 and 36 months. For at least 9 months.
