The profession of lawyer consists in putting his legal competence and his eloquence at the service of those who need assistance in defending their cause in court.

Open-mindedness is essential. Considering lawyers' often busy schedules, a good sense of organization and a certain seriousness in the work are welcome. You also have to know how to communicate and get out of the legal rules to get to the point. Finally, since a hearing is not static and the pleadings require rapidity of action, a certain liveliness must be required.

The profession of lawyer

The law becomes more complex, litigation is increasing ... But, the lawyer always defends the interests of the accused. With his head straight, he is nonetheless a charismatic speaker capable of transcending himself for his client.

In his office, the lawyer is busy all day: studying cases, researching case law, meeting clients ... Depending on the size of his company, he is more or less specialized. In civil law, he will deal in particular with divorces and breach of trust. In criminal law, it will deal with murders, thefts ... Especially since no case is like another! When a dispute arises, the lawyer primarily exercises an advisory activity: he listens to his client's problems in order to help him as favorably as possible.

The choice of independence

At the end of his two years as a trainee lawyer, the lawyer has two options: setting up on his own or working in a firm.

Setting up on your own is not a decision to be taken lightly. This implies not only to find premises, but also to have a sufficient clientele to be able to pay its expenses and be remunerated.

A busy profession

However, whether you opt for independence or a law firm, the observation remains the same: if the job is fascinating, it requires great availability! Not only do you have to know how to organize yourself, but you should not do this job if you decide to work 35 hours a week, because it is not feasible!

The interests of the client above all

Mediator, he tries to settle conflicts upstream, in order to avoid trial. Then, he prepares the file to be presented to the judges ... in order to mitigate the possible sanction. This is its other prerogative: litigation activity. Pleading is the culmination of a case. The lawyer speaks before a jurisdiction, a tribunal, a judge. An exercise that requires skills of speaker and rhetoric in order to best defend the interests of the client.

This act tends to disappear: the courts being more and more loaded, the lawyers practice less. Thus, in the commercial court or in the industrial tribunal, the lawyer pleads in cabinet, in the form of a discussion with the judge. But in the Assize Court, the pleading remains queen. Solemn and eloquent, it can last for hours.

 Training

The 1st year Master in Law is compulsory to register in an Institute of Judicial Studies (IEJ), in order to take the entrance examination to the Lawyer Training Center (CRFPA). Once admitted, the student prepares the certificate of aptitude for the legal profession (CAPA), an essential diploma to practice.

After the baccalaureate

The main path leading to the legal profession is that of university. The minimum duration of studies is four years, ie until the master's degree. In order to optimize his training and with a view to a specialization, a double course is possible.

After a bac + 4

While it is possible to take the lawyer exam with a master's degree in law, a business school or IEP (Institute of Political Studies) diploma, obtaining a master's degree is increasingly recommended. . On the one hand, because the growing number of graduates entering the labor market makes employers demanding, on the other hand because it allows for the development of training which has hitherto been general. There are nearly 200 postgraduate university degrees.

Among them, the most popular among aspiring lawyers are those in private law, business and tax law as well as social law. In addition, the entrance examination of the CRFPA (Regional Center for Professional Lawyer Training) being very selective, it is imperative to go through an IEJ (Institute of Judicial Studies) in order to properly prepare for the competition and to put all the odds on his side. The YEIs are open to holders of a master's degree in law or equivalent, but also to holders of a third cycle.

CAPA - essential sesame

To obtain the CAPA (Certificate of aptitude for the legal profession), you must first pass the entrance examination for a CRFPA. Once the exam has been obtained, the student receives essentially practical lessons for one year, sanctioned by the sacrosanct diploma. But after taking the oath, the "apprentice lawyer" still has to complete a two-year paid internship.
