The adoption of the new asylum-immigration law in France
The new immigration law was finally passed by French MPs after a week of harsh opposition and a few hours of heated contests. This new law is not at all good news for immigrants. In this text, the examination of the asylum application is reduced to six months, against eleven previously.
An asylum law badly received by organizations helping migrants
France recently adopted the new immigration law which strictly governs migratory flows. We can see from the start that this legislative text provides for an exemption system, especially when it comes to providing care, accommodation and food to immigrants in need. For some, the content is very much oriented towards repression and restriction of foreigners, because:
this new law makes it difficult to obtain documents, introduces the integration contract, increases detention before expulsion (from 12 to 32 days) and introduces the handling of all those who apply for a visa or a residence permit.
Migrants become “working tools” in the labor market, but they are invisible people who have no rights.
This law shortens the deadlines for applying for asylum, doubles the time during which irregular migrants can be detained and introduces a one-year prison sentence for having entered France illegally.
What is controversial about this?
One of the most significant changes is that failed asylum seekers awaiting deportation can be detained for up to 90 days, double the current period of 45 days. The government initially planned for a 135-day period. The main purpose of the law is to reduce the length of immigration applications and to make the deportation system more efficient for those rejected. Refugees who have been granted asylum will be further assisted in integrating and learning French.
The positives of this Collomb bill
It extends residence permits from one to four years for people with "subsidiary" protection, but not with full refugee status. The reduction in the processing time for asylum applications allows the French state to make a strict selection based on strict criteria that go into the fight against terrorists and the stability of the state budget. It also improves protections for those who have been granted asylum. The residence permit for these beneficiaries will be valid for four years, instead of one year. It is possible for children who have been granted asylum to apply for family reunification. This right allows him to bring their parents. This law even provides for extending this privilege to their brothers and sisters.
