A lawyer in the making or in activity, do you dream of a career in the United States? Then this program may interest you. As law is a discipline unique to each country, working abroad can be difficult for law students, lawyers and lawyers, except those specializing in international law.

But if you are really tempted by the American dream, Paris Dauphine is launching a specific preparation program for the bars of the States of New York and California, in order to allow French or European lawyers to become American “lawyers”.

To be a lawyer in the United States, you must pass the local bar exam, a French lawyer cannot practice in the country freely, in the same way that a foreign lawyer must obtain an equivalence to practice in France.

This is easily understood by the fact that American law is very different from French law, moreover it is largely specific to each state of the country.

In most states, a US law degree is also required to pass the bar exam, but those in New York and California accept applicants with foreign law degrees. However, for the New York bar you must have a law degree from a common law country (most Anglo-Saxon countries), for that of California you must already be a lawyer, regardless of the country. The program is therefore not intended for all law students. There were already trainings in London. But this is the first time that a continental European university has been offered such a partnership.

A 6 or 10 month training course, mainly online

The program lasts 6 or 10 months (from September for the first option, November for the second). The program is carried out in collaboration with the American group Barbri international, specializing in legal training. Each participant will benefit from a personalized program, online American law courses will be conducted by law professors teaching in the United States. 20 to 30 people will be admitted to the program.

Mock exams, student tutoring and help in applying to the bar will also be offered to participants. The US final exam takes place in July.

Candidates will follow the courses entirely online, and the year will be punctuated by 4 “workshops” at the Paris-Dauphine premises for the 10-month formula. The number of lessons is the same in both formulas, 6 and 10 months, but the program website specifies that the first option requires “25 to 30 hours” of work per week, against 10 to 15 hours for that in 10 months.

It is specified that students will also be able to follow reinforcement courses in legal English in parallel.

The training program is led by two law professors from Paris-Dauphine University, Duncan Fairgrieve and Arnaud Raynouard, as well as Rob Dudley, from Barbri International. The cost of the training is € 6,420 ($ 6,995 depending on the training site).
