His Majesty King Hassan II, was born in Rabat on July 9, 1929 and died on July 23, 1999. His reign lasted 38 years (
Hassan II was born of Mohammed V and succeeded him on the Moroccan throne in 1961. Having set up a Parliament with two Chambers by a new Constitution, the king has to face many political dissensions within different opposing parties. He escapes moreover several attacks. The organization of the Green March, in 1975, allows it to increase its popularity. However, when he decides to annex Western Sahara, he puts down the UN, Algeria, the Polisario Front and Libya. Conflicts are worsening over the years and he is considering the organization of a referendum in Western Sahara and a ceasefire. Hassan II ensured a certain freedom in his policy, which he also focused on peace in the Middle East. It gets closer to the West and supports Kuwait during the Gulf War (1990). Having acquired the title of "Commander of the believers", he died in 1999, giving way to his son, Mohammed VI.
