2. 1 - Dependence: a consequence of diseases
All diseases can be causes of onset or aggravation of dependence. Degenerative diseases of the central nervous system such as dementia, destructive diseases of the joints (hip osteoarthritis, knee osteoarthritis), stroke are good examples.

In the same elderly, several causes of dependence are often highlighted, be they acute or chronic. It is the entanglement of these causes that makes the gravity of the situation.

For example, femoral neck fracture in a person who previously had diffuse osteoarthritis, decreased visual acuity, and gait and balance disorders associated with an extra-pyramidal syndrome , is an example. In such a context, the resumption of walking after placement of a prosthesis takes into account the pre-existing difficulties. In addition to this entanglement of pathologies, we must not neglect the participation of psychical or social factors.

2. 2 - Hospitalization as a factor of dependency
When the elderly patient has not received a prior medical and social assessment, emergency hospitalization occurs during intercurrent illness.
The elderly person is usually supported by a service whose mission is to provide purely technical care for an "organ pathology".
This situation is often deleterious for the elderly: the hospitalization then becomes a cause of dependence which is added to the previous ones.

Hospitalization can also be prolonged for neglected social problems, or hastily resolved without overall evaluation.
In some cases, an unplanned or unwanted entry into an institution is perceived by the older person as an act of punishment and abandonment. It is a new cause of dependence, because of the psychic problems which inevitably result from it.
