Mecca1 (in Arabic: مكة, makka) is a city in western Saudi Arabia, not far from the hinge separating Hedjaz from Asir, 80 km from the Red Sea, and capital of the province of Mecca.
According to the Islamic tradition, the prophet of Islam, Mahomet, was born in the late sixth century.2 It is home to the Kaaba in the heart of the Masjid Al-Haram mosque ("The Sacred Mosque") and the Muslim tradition Foundation in Ibrahim (Abraham), making it the most sacred holy city of Islam. Access is prohibited for persons who are not Muslim and for single women, even Muslims.
The pre-Islamic history of the city is rather obscure and difficult to access. Since the end of the 20th century, it has been the place of pilgrimage in Mecca (hajj), which has gathered millions of faithful from different faiths of Islam from all over the world since the seventh century. It is also the place to which the Muslim believers are turning for their daily prayers.
Since the 1970s, real estate speculators have been building infrastructure, with a gigantic scale compared to Las Vegas, to accommodate more faithful but at the same time destroying Islamic historic sites5,6.
