Kaigaku ( 獪 かい 岳 がくKaigaku ) is the former disciple of Jigoro Kuwajima the Elder of Zenitsu Agatsuma . During a mission where all the other Demon Slayers were killed by Muzan Kibutsuji , he had himself transformed into a demon. He replaced Gyutaro and Daki of the Twelve Demonic Moons at Higher Rank 6 ( 上 じょう 弦 げんの 陸 ろく Jōgen no Roku ).

 

 

 

Appearance

As a human, Kaigaku is a muscular young man of average human with black hair and turquoise eyes. After becoming a demon, he gains four flame-like black marks on both sides of his cheeks, fangs, pale skin, and pointy ears. His eyes also receive the Higher Rank 6 kanji ( 上 じょう 弦 げんの 陸 ろく Jōgen no Roku ).

 

Kaigaku is usually seen wearing a black kimono with a blue obi over his Demon Slayer uniform with yellow markings. He also wears several necklaces with blue magatama-like pendants that were yellow when he was human.

 

personality

Although seemingly brash and arrogant, Kaigaku is actually cowardly and selfish. Like many orphans living on the streets, he grew up resorting to theft and other immoral means to survive.[2][1] This caused him to develop an intense form of self-preservation, often doing what is in his own best interests at the expense of others. This is best exemplified in his interactions with Gyomei Himejima's group of orphans.

 

At some point after this, Kaigaku met and became Jigoro Kuwajima's disciple. Due to his great skill with a sword, he was set to become the next Thunder Hashira (鳴なり柱ばしら Nari Bashira?). However, unlike the other orphans who join the Corps, Kaigaku never developed a desire to kill demons or protect people. Facing a stronger opponent, Kaigaku quickly surrendered.[1] Moreover, he seems to have developed a feeling of hypocritical complacency. He called Zenitsu Agatsuma trash for having no pride or guts, and that those who judge him good (meaning he is worthy) are good and those who judge him bad are bad.

 

Story

Kaigaku was an orphan and a thief who had to eat scraps and steal to survive. He was one of the orphans that Gyomei Himejima kept in his temple. After being caught by the other children for stealing money from the temple, he was chased out at night and encountered a demon, whom he then let into the temple in exchange for having his life spared.[ 3]

 

Kaigaku developed the belief that strength and survival were the only things worth respecting and was willing to grovel and beg for his life if that was what it took to survive. Eventually, he was picked up by Jigoro along with Zenitsu, learning thunder breathing. He became determined to become Jigoro's successor and the new Thunder Hashira. Jigoro, however, insisted that he and Zenitsu would become his successors, despite Zenitsu's weakness and shy nature.
