The most fuel-efficient used vehicles

The United States Consumer Reports has compiled a list of the 5-year-old vehicles that offer the best fuel economy on the road, without forgetting the reliability criteria associated with them.

WHY 5 YEARS
Five years is the magic number where a vehicle has usually lost 50% of its original value, but if it has been well maintained it still has many years to go. Assuming that the average number of kilometers driven per year is around 20,000, a 5 year old vehicle should have around 100,000 km.

TAKE YOUR TIME TO MAKE A PURCHASE
Finding a new car or SUV can be a challenge. Due to the global shortage of microchips needed for car safety and infotainment systems linked to the pandemic, deliveries of new cars are often delayed or lower than expected. Supply is therefore limited and new car dealers charge a high price. This reality is also found in used models which are rare and quite expensive, you have to be patient and shop well.

Here is a list of used vehicles that offer very good performance at the pump and good overall quality. These are all 2016 models.

1- HONDA FIT
The Fit is not only one of the most reliable small cars on the market, but it's also the most economical on our list with an output of around 6.7 liters per 100 km and it's also the most versatile with its space. modular and its multifunction seats in the rear. However, you have to be able to live with the noise in the cabin and the CVT box, which is not always convenient.

2- MAZDA 3
Available as a 4 or 5-door model, the Mazda3 is a pleasure to drive, thanks to very precise handling, a lively and efficient engine, and well-tuned transmissions. The base 2.0-liter engine delivers around 7.5 liters per 100 km in the automatic transmission and 7.7 in the manual transmission. Driving is the most fun of the models recommended with the Jetta. Watch out for abnormally fast brakes, rear suspension and paintwork.

3- TOYOTA COROLLA
This generation of Corollas gained in size - interior space rivals that of some midsize sedans - but its 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine and continuously variable transmission still kept it running an overall revving average. around 7.5 liters per 100 km. She's not the funniest. The CVT is a complete boredom, but reliability is rock-solid and you have the latest in connectivity.

4- TOYOTA YARIS
The Yaris picked up where the echo left off. Unpretentious model with little equipment and basic comfort. But a model five in good condition risks doing another 10 years without costing you too much. Its output is around 7.2 liters per 100 km.
Acceleration is slow, in part due to an outdated four-speed automatic transmission. Handling suffers from numb steering and severe body roll. But the vehicle will take you to your destination without a lot of comfort.

5- VOLKSWAGEN JETTA
I know a lot of people are concerned about the reliability of the Jetta in the long run. But the 1.4-liter did a good job in this model. This little engine is competent, fun to drive, and the car is spacious, comfortable and fun to drive. You will make on average about 7 liters per 100 km

6- HYUNDAI ACCENT
I allow myself here to add a personal choice. The Accent that arrived in 2011 has proven to be reliable, practical and versatile. The yield is around 7 liters per 100 km. Used models aren't easy to find right now like many other models, if you find one it's a good choice like all of the models on this list.
