Auto insurance, what are the optional guarantees?
explosion fire warranty 1

As the name suggests, third party insurance only covers damage caused to others by the insured. To extend this mandatory minimum guarantee, more guarantees must be taken out.

Summary

    The driver's individual guarantee
    Fire and explosion guarantees
    Guarantees against the effects of wind, catastrophes, attacks
    Legal protection for auto insurance

The driver's individual guarantee

Liability insurance only covers damage suffered by passengers in a vehicle. So that the driver is also insured, he must take out a specific guarantee: the individual driver's guarantee.

The driver's individual guarantee covers injuries he sustains in an accident:

    For which he is personally responsible;
    Caused fortuitously, for example by slippery pavement or fog.

Depending on the contracts, this guarantee may also cover members of the insured's family, when they drive their car.

Compensation can be calculated in two ways: up to the amount of the actual costs or according to a flat-rate scale. The costs covered by the contract are in general:

    Medical, surgical, pharmaceutical costs;
    Prostheses;
    Hospital costs;
    The financial loss related to a work stoppage or a permanent incapacity;
    Permanent partial or total disability, with however a "floor" between 10 and 15% disability, below which the insured does not receive anything;
    Death: a capital is paid to the driver's family.

The contract may provide for compensation ceilings, that is to say a maximum payment beyond which the insured person no longer receives anything.
Damage guarantees

In a traffic accident, whether you are totally or partially responsible for it, if you are only insured to a third party, you will not get any compensation for damage to your vehicle. And it will be the same for all other damage that can deteriorate it, for example a hailstorm or a fire.

Therefore, if you wish, your insurer can offer you different contracts, intended to protect you against one of these risks ... or against all at the same time.
Damage and collision guarantee

Also called "third party collision", this is the first level of vehicle insurance for those on a tight budget. Its role is to compensate a collision with a "third party", that is to say another vehicle, but also a cyclist, a pedestrian or even an animal, if its owner is known.

In other words, you will not be compensated:

    If an unidentified vehicle hits it and flees;
    If he hits an obstacle (a tree or a wall) or if he leaves the road alone;
    If it hits an animal whose owner is unknown, such as a wild animal.

Collision Damage Insurance also does not cover damage to goods and items transported in the vehicle. To cover them, it will therefore be necessary to take out a more advantageous contract.
Damage guarantee for all accidents

It is also called "comprehensive damage", not to be confused with "comprehensive insurance".

All accident damage coverage is a little more expensive than collision damage coverage because it comes into play whenever the vehicle is damaged, without a third party necessarily being involved. The guarantee also works in the event of:

    Natural disaster (storm, hail, flood);
    Fire or explosion (following riots or an attack, for example);
    Technological disaster.

To set their price, some insurers take the age of the vehicle into account. An interesting option for cars over five years old, provided they have few kilometers on the clock.
Theft guarantee

If you have a new or almost new vehicle, here is an essential guarantee and often included in complementary auto insurance contracts. It is intended to compensate the theft (or attempted theft) as well as its management bodies.

The conditions under which the theft occurred are obviously very important. For example, if you have not locked the doors or the trunk of the car, the insurer will refuse to apply the coverage.

When it comes to items left inside the car (or the top case of a motorcycle) and then stolen regardless of the vehicle, read your contract carefully. Be aware, however, that their theft is rarely compensated.

As for accessories and equipment, they are generally compensated if they are installed in series (the manufacturer's catalog as proof). Otherwise, they will only be covered if you declare them to your insurer, and the latter includes them in the contract, at an additional cost.
