Training to become a lawyer

 

Initial training

Access to the profession of lawyer requires at least 6 years of study after the baccalaureate and imposes a selection from the first year of law.

 

Law studies begin with the law degree (bac + 3) which allows you to acquire the basics of law and begin to prepare the professions of legal professionals such as company lawyer, bailiff, magistrate, notary, etc.

 

The pursuit is done via the master in order to specialize in a specific legal field.

 

Then comes the time to obtain the CAPA (certificate of aptitude for the legal profession), training in 18 months open to holders of a master's degree in law (bac + 4) or a diploma admitted in equivalence, even if many candidates have in fact a higher level (master 2 and even doctorate in law). As soon as you have obtained the CAPA, you can apply to register with the bar after taking the oath.

 

To access it, it is an essential step: that of the entrance examination for a lawyer school (EDA) or a Regional Center for Professional Training of Lawyers (CRFPA).

 

Very selective (30 to 35% admitted), the CRFPA entrance exam can be taken three times and is prepared in 1 year in an Institute of Judicial Studies (IEJ) attached to the Faculty of Law.

 

Continuing education

Lawyers already in activity are subject to the obligation of continuing education at the rate of 20 hours per year or 40 hours over 2 years as part of continuing education.

 

Regarding the desire to retrain in this profession, no continuing training allows it. You must follow the classic course detailed above (except in certain cases such as lecturers, lecturers, lecturers, magistrates, etc.)
