Oedipus MYTH

Oedipus, in Greek mythology, king of Thebes, son of Laius and Jocasta, king and queen of Thebes.

Laius, the king of Thebes, anxious not to have an heir, since his wife Jocasta had no children, went to consult the oracle of Delphi. He predicted that the son born to him would kill his father and marry his mother. He repudiated his wife, but Jocastus, intoxicating him, succeeded, however, in uniting with him. Wanting to escape his fate, he abandoned his son in the mountains on the slopes of Mount Cithéron, after having tied both feet with a rope and pierced his ankles with a nail. The baby was picked up by a shepherd, who called him Oedipus ("he who has swollen feet" in Greek) and brought him to his master Polybos, king of Corinth. His wife Périboea was desperate to have a child and raised him as his own son. One day, a young Corinthian taught Oedipus that he was only a foundling. The latter, intrigued by this revelation, consulted the Pythia of Delphi, who repeated the prediction made to Laius: "You will kill your father and you will marry your mother." Persuaded that Polybos and Périboea were his true parents, Oedipus left them in haste. On the way, in the defile leading to Delphi, he crossed Laios on his chariot (without knowing that he was his father) and, having quarreled with him, he killed him. Thus, the first part of the prophecy is fulfilled.

Continuing on his way, Oedipus arrived at the gates of Thebes, which was under the control of a bloodthirsty monster called the Sphinx, a lion with a woman's head. The creature was blocking the roads leading to the city, killing and devouring travelers who could not solve the famous riddle she offered them: "What is the animal that morning walks on four feet, at noon on two and evening on three ?". Oedipus, without a home, without friends, and having nothing to lose, resolved to meet him and try to solve the enigma. He answered without hesitation that it was the man who, in the morning of his life, walks on all fours, goes on his two legs to adulthood, and helps himself with a cane to support his old age. The Sphinx, disappointed, committed suicide. Welcomed as a savior to Thebes whom he had delivered from the monster, Oedipus was named king and married Jocasta, unaware then that she was his mother. The second part of the oracle was accomplished.
