Scuba diving is an activity consisting of staying underwater in breathing, either by
using a hookah (pipe providing air from the surface), or most often by
equipping yourself with a (air bottle carried by the diver). Specific equipment
generally consists of an isothermal combination, a mask, fins, belt ballast or
integrated stabilizer jacket equipped with a direct system, and a dive usually
containing the compressed air around 200 bars. The gas is supplied to the
plunger via a regulator. Measuring instruments are used to control the dive:
pressure gauge (pressure in the bottle) and dive computer. The diving computers
calculate the diving parameters in real time and optimize the dives compared to
the traditional use of a dive (deep diving time) and decompression tables
(tables giving the maximum time depending on depth and immersion time). Despite
the computers, divers must be able to continuously monitor their dive
parameters and be able to calculate their decompression stops by traditional
means.
Scuba diving is practiced either in a professional setting or
as a leisure activity.
Professional dives are carried out in the different branches
of industry in the marine environment, or for the exploration or exploitation
of this environment. It also has an important development in the military.
Recreational diving has as its main purpose diving discovery
of the underwater world, fishing is forbidden (in France) to the diver equipped
with scuba, it is therefore reserved for the diver in apnea.
Scuba Diving Techniques [
In general, it is possible to classify the different diving
techniques according to the technology used for diving. This classification is
thus basically oriented in a more or less chronological way, according to the
advent of the different technologies allowing men to evolve under the waters:
• Snorkeling or snorkelling, practiced especially by underwater hunters
and underwater trekkers.
Depending on the type of diving suit used:
• Scuba diving with helmet
• Rigid scuba diving
• Scuba diving
Depending on the type of respirable circuit used:
• Diving with hookah (open circuit)
• Diving by air or mixtures (open circuit)
• Diving with a recycler (closed circuit)
Depending on the gas inhaled:
• Scuba diving
• "Tech" or "Teak" diving where the diver breathes a
mixture of gas
This article focuses on scuba diving, which is the most
widely practiced in the world since the 1950s and 60s.
The open-circuit gases are those which are expelled outwards
at each expiration of the diver (production of bubbles).
The closed circuit gases remain in the diver's equipment and
are "recycled" at each expiration. The device removes some components of the exhaled gas,
and introduces others, to produce respirable gas again in the same supply
circuit (little or no bubble production).
